Dr. Melanie Oesterwind has dedicated her life to animal care, combining compassion, experience, and a uniquely broad skill set to serve pets and their families. She knew she wanted to become a veterinarian as early as age seven; her passion began with a simple desire to help animals and grew into a lifelong commitment to veterinary medicine.

She earned her veterinary degree from Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany, and has been practicing since 2009. In 2020, she moved to Georgia and began working at local veterinary clinics and hospitals before opening Flint River Veterinary Clinic in 2026. Over the years, Dr. O has developed extensive hands-on experience in small animal general practice and emergency care, while also building a strong background in zoo, wildlife, and exotic medicine. This diverse training allows her to confidently treat a wide range of species and provide comprehensive care that many clinics cannot offer.

Dr. Oesterwind works with traditional companion animals like dogs and cats, as well as a wide variety of exotic pets, including birds, reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, rodents, amphibians, fish, and even invertebrates. She also has experience caring for select farm animals, such as goats, sheep, pigs, and horses, as well as local wildlife, such as deer, opossums, and many more. Her broad expertise makes her an invaluable resource for pet owners who often struggle to find veterinary care for non-traditional animals.

At home, Dr. O shares her life with her husband and two beloved dogs. Gator, her energetic and friendly pit bull, has never met a stranger, while Ally, a loyal and protective mixed breed, reigns as the “queen” of the household. Their personalities are a daily reminder of the joy and connection that drive her work.
